Judy Cooper Lyle, Phyllis Designs, draws on her background in theatre to create her one-of-a-kind works for the urban woman. She considers her clothing to be “wearable art”, highly influenced by costume design, African, and Asian art. She has been creating her unique look over the past 20 years.
The designs are created utilizing silk scarves, end-of-bolt fabric, “found” material, and vintage pieces. The designer’s goal is to create lovely, wearable, one-of-a-kind designs that remain affordable for women.
In addition to having her own design label, Judy is the artistic director of The Urban Spectrum Theatre, which she founded in 1974, an inner city company in Minneapolis, producing multicultural, accessible works with young people and professional performers. Her most recent show was Warm Dark Dusk, a jazz music and dance production surrounding the poetry of Langston Hughes.
