Singer, Songwriter Mati Lyons can turn heads with her effortless powerhouse vocals.
Fashion Meets Music sat down with the young artist to find out about the girl behind the voice.
FMM: Hi Mati, would you like to introduce yourself and tell our readers who you are and what you do?
Hi my name is Mati Lyons and I’m a singer/songwriter originally from a small town in Ohio. I hope to use my powerful voice and my music combined with my soulful sound to inspire other artists and all people with courage and passion to follow their own dreams, whatever that may be.
Growing up, I listened to all kinds of music and fell in love with many different genres like Pop, R&B, Country to Hip-Hop and I knew at an early age that music would play a big role in my life.
It wasn’t until early in my high school that I entered my first talent contest and sang in my first large show. It was the scariest thing I had ever done, putting my talent out there for the first time publically for everyone to see and hear.
But, after getting that first standing ovation and hearing the judges of the contest telling me I had the talent for a professional career in music, that was my confirmation that the passion I had for singing and music is what I was truly meant to do.
FMM: When did you realize that you wanted to sing?
I realized when I was pretty young that I loved to sing. I would sing all the time in my room and around the house. One day I was singing the National Anthem in the bathtub and didn’t realize how loud I was singing. My mum had heard me downstairs and came up to the bathroom because she thought the song was coming from the radio. She realized there was no radio in the room and asked me if it had been me singing. At first I said “No” because I thought I was going to be in trouble for being so loud. She then d me that I had an amazing voice that’s when I first realized I wanted to be a singer.
FMM: Does your family have a background in music?
There’s not really anyone in my immediate family that was musically involved. When we were younger, my sister and I would always sing along to the Disney movies. She was the one that always encouraged me back then to have fun singing.
FMM: If you had to describe your sound in 3 words, what would they be?
Rich, Powerful, and Different
FMM: Which famous artists do you admire? Why?
Beyonce and Christina Aguilera are the 2 main artists I look up to without a question. They are 2 very strong women and they are also able to sound very vulnerable when they sing whilst still hitting their power notes.
FMM: You seem to be performing literally EVERYWHERE at the moment, do you get nervous before a performance?
Yes!!! I get nervous ALL THE TIME! And I’ve realized that nerves are a good thing because it means that you’re putting everything into your craft and you really care about it so embrace being nervous.
FMM: Tell us about your upcoming performances
June 4th I will be performing as a Featured Artist at this year’s 2016 Ohio Troy Strawberry Festival which is a big festival close to my hometown. I’m really excited about it because I use to go to this festival when I was younger with my family, so to now be performing at it is so great!
June 11th– I am honored to be performing my song “Skys on Fire” along with other songs at the 2016 Dayton, Ohio Gay Pride Event
July 1st– I will be performing as a Featured Artist at the 2016 International Fashion Music Concert in Detroit where I will be performing my song along and other songs for a Fashion Show Event with American and International Fashion Designers.
I also have several pending upcoming music projects and shows that are in the works now so more to come.
FMM: If you could collaborate with any artist who would it be and why?
Beyonce is at the top of my list, I love the strength she portrays in her image and songs and the way she views women, with power & independence is really inspiring to me as an artist.
FMM: If you could perform to any fashion designer during their show, who would it be and why?
I would love to perform during the Victoria Secret Fashion Show. It always looks like so much fun and I have worked as a model before so it would be fun to walk the runway in that show.
FMM: How would you describe your sense of style?
My style can be described simply as Boho-Chic meets Sophistication
FMM: What’s one random thing about you that people might not know?
Personally; when I get stressed out I love to go Longboarding to clear my head and relax.
Musically; I turned down a VIP Vocal Scholarship that I was awarded to a prestigious Musical Theater & Performing Arts College in NYC to get started on my career as a Recording Artist.
