Fashion Meets Music sat down with talented Rapper Supasang to talk about his music, inspirations and what’s next for the West Coast Artist.
FMM: Would you like to introduce yourself to our readers?
My name is Supasang, I’m a recording rap artist from the Orange County area and I’ve been creating music on and off for the past 12 years.
FMM: Growing up, what inspired you musically and how is it shown through your music today?
I grew up in a rough neighborhood in West Fullerton and my music was my ticket out the hood. I wanted to share my story with the rest of the world and music gave me the platform to do exactly just that.
I also want to let the world know that we can become something great and that our circumstances don’t have to govern how we live our lives. When you listen to my music, you will be able to envision what I have painted as an artist. You will experience every emotion that I have been through, whether it’s a sad, happy, and/or tragic.
FMM: If you had to describe your sound in 3 words, what would they be?
Street, real and emotional.
FMM: Do you ever feel you are pigeonholed musically?
Yes, I feel as an Asian artist, people don’t take you seriously. Everyone has their opinion of how Asians should be and categorize us; especially in the entertainment business. It’s hard enough to be in this industry, but even harder when people are still trapped in ideas of what a rapper should be.
FMM: If you could collaborate with any artist totally out of your genre, who would it be and why?
If he was still alive, I would have to say The King of Pop, Michael Jackson. I grew up listening to his music as a kid. I remember my mother and I would drive around in her old white Camaro bumping his “Thriller” album in her tape deck. Besides being a fan, I think he’s a very talented individual and working with him would have definitely been a phenomenal experience.
FMM: If you could perform to any fashion designer during their show, who would it be and why?
That’s an easy one. LOL! My wife got me into watching Victoria’s Secret Fashion show with her every year. Their show seems super fun to be a part of, from the cast to the crew to the Victoria’s Secret girls themselves. If I could just have five minutes on that stage I would absolutely have the time of my life.
FMM: In true Fashion Meets Music style, you are involved in fashion. Can you tell us about your snapback brand iAM Apparel, what’s the story behind that?
iAM Apparel was founded by my wife and I. It is based on our representation as who we are as a person or people. For instance, our first design the three headed elephant. It represents the Laotian people and my culture, being that I am Laotian, and not a lot of the world knows who we are and where we are geographically.
I wanted to present this national symbol of the Laotian people and make us more well-known. iAM Apparel doesn’t just represent one type of people. It can represent us as individuals or as a group.
FMM: How would you describe your personal sense of style?
I’m a very simple kind of guy when it comes to style and fashion. Being from the hood, my wardrobe consisted of wife beaters, white Tees, Dickies pants, Converse Chuck Taylors and Locs. Shirts were extra large and pants/jeans were extra baggy. I’ve since grown out of that and have learned to wear clothes that fit me a little better.
FMM: What is the hardest part of your job?
Dealing with the haters. It’s never pleasant dealing with people who dislike you even though they know nothing about you. A lot of times we are misjudged as a person by the music we put out. I can understand if you dislike my music because my music will not appeal to everybody but hating me on a personal level, it’s a different story.
I wish people would take the time to get to know me and who I really am as a person instead of judging me based on my music and image.
FMM: Do you have any new music or videos coming out?
Yes I have plenty of new music but it won’t be released until my new album is complete. With that said, yes I am working on a new project, my sophomore album titled “God’s Son” which will be out this summer earliest or fall the latest.
FMM: Tell us something we don’t know about you.
I was born in Laos located in Southeast Asia, which means I speak two languages, English and Lao. And because I speak Lao fluently I am able to rap in Lao as well. I have a few singles written and recorded in Lao. I am a big family man, happily married to a beautiful wife with two amazing kids. I am also a very dedicated follower of Jesus Christ.
FMM: Where can we find you?
