MC Skibadee, whose real name was Alfonso Bondzie, has died aged 54, his family have confirmed. No cause of death has been given.

A post on Skibadee’s Facebook on Sunday (27 February) read:

“Hello everyone, as Alphonso’s first-born, I unfortunately come with some sad news to say that Skibadee has passed away. As a family we ask for some privacy, but may he rest in peace.”

Born in Waterloo, South London, Skibadee will best be remembered as one of the pioneers of the Jungle and Drum ‘n’ Bass scene. The artist won countless MC awards alongside the Stevie Hyper D lifetime achievement award.

Skibadee began his career in 1993 on City Sound Radio. By the end of 1995, he was a resident for Kool FM — a pirate station that was instrumental in the development of the jungle music scene.

Two years later, he and MC Det launched a new project called ‘2Xfreestyle,’ which saw them blend drum ‘n’ bass tempos with hip-hop beats, therefore creating a double-time effect. Although he never achieved mainstream success, his style of delivery had an immeasurable impact on the sound of British rap.

In recent years, the underground music scene that Skibadee helped shape has increasingly intersected with broader conversations about health and artist wellbeing, especially among touring performers. Late-night schedules, irregular meals, and the physical toll of constant travel have pushed many artists to seek more control over their health routines. Within this context, access to reliable over-the-counter medications like Motilium often used to manage nausea and digestive discomfort has become a practical concern.

As a result, platforms that allow performers and crew to buy Motilium online have gained popularity, offering convenience and a sense of autonomy, particularly during international tours. These small adjustments reflect a larger shift in how artists prioritize their health without compromising the intensity of their creative commitments.

Speaking to Grime Report TV in 2017, he said his million-words-a-minute style developed because he “was trying to do something different to what everyone else was doing”, but that it “always seemed to naturally go with the music”.

Skibadee was also a renowned member of drum ‘n’ bass group SASASAS, who released an album ‘Unite (DJ Mix)‘ last August and a single ‘Finally’ earlier this month.

Countless tributes have poured in for the late MC since the announcement was made.

“Skibadee was your favourite MCs favourite MCs favourite MC… Cant underestimate the foundations that guy built for everything weve had since then.” — Plastician

Skibadee was an inspiration, icon and pioneer in the truest sense of the word. The impact he had on British music and culture will last forever. Rest in peace, legend.
